Glycyrrhiza glabra

In traditional Chinese medicine, licorice is considered a harmonizing herb, and is often included in blends to synergize and balance their action. A powerful tonic for adrenal insufficiency, fatigue and stress, licorice inspires the body to regain balance and recalibrate its stress response. Licorice’s demulcent properties allow it to soothe dryness, inflammation, and irritation of the mucous membranes, particularly in the throat, lungs and gut. It soothes gastrointestinal inflammation and irritation due to reflux, ulcers, gastritis, and IBS. Licorice may be useful for those with weak immune systems or those living with autoimmune disorders. It is also used topically and internally for shingles/herpes. Licorice is slightly phytoestrogenic, and can be useful for hormone imbalances or for symptoms of menopause. It is the best-known herb for people who suffer from excessively low blood pressure that causes light-headedness or fainting.

*Licorice should be avoided or used with caution in people with high blood pressure, or if pregnant. This is not a complete list of all possible contraindications.*
